choosing your sauna heater

The power requirement of the electric heater is determined by the size of the sauna and the types of materials used within it. On average, 1 kW of heater power is necessary for each cubic meter of the sauna's volume. If the sauna includes window or glass surfaces or heat-retaining materials like brick or concrete, the power demand escalates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I select the correct heater power?

The dimensions and structures of a sauna have a direct impact on the amount of heater power needed. On average, 1 kW of heating power is necessary for each cubic metre of the sauna's volume. However, this power demand goes up if the sauna incorporates elements like window surfaces or heat-storing materials such as brick, concrete, or substantial logs.

Each square metre of non-insulated surfaces like stone or glass enhances the heater power requirement equivalent to an increase of 1.2 cubic metres in the sauna room volume. If the internal walls of the sauna are built with non-insulated logs, this factor rises to 1.5.

If the heater is underpowered, it will require extended and more vigorous heating, which in turn shortens its lifespan.

Which control unit should I select for my electric sauna heater?

While external control units are essential for larger heaters in public facilities, they can also be effectively used in residential settings, provided the necessary electrical and sensor wiring is considered during the sauna design phase.

A wide variety of heaters designed for domestic use also come as what are known as E models. These models employ a control unit in place of traditional operating switches on the heater itself. This is particularly advantageous when the heater is integrated into a bench.

How much space does the heater require around it?

All heaters come with designated safety distances that outline how closely the heater can be situated to walls and benches constructed from flammable materials. Generally, heaters with more power require larger safety distances. You can find these safety distance specifications on installation manual.

Strictly maintaining these minimum safety distances is crucial to prevent the risk of fires!

Where can I install a digital control panel for the heater?

The control panel, designed to be splash-proof and operating at low voltage, can be mounted in areas like the washroom, changing room, or even the living area. If it is to be installed within the sauna itself, it should be positioned no less than the minimum safety distance from the heater and should not exceed a height of one metre from the floor. As a safety precaution, ensure it is installed out of children's reach.

Where to install the temperature sensor?

The sensor must be placed exactly as prescribed in the instruction manual in order to ensure that the heater works correctly.

Please note! The supply air vent of the sauna must not be near the temperature sensor. The air stream near the vent will cool the sensor, resulting in the sensor sending erroneous temperature information to the control unit. This may cause the heater to overheat. Minimum distance between the supply air vent and the temperature sensor:

  • non-directional vent: 1,000 mm
  • vent directed away from the sensor: 500 mm

If the minimum distance cannot be adhered to, the ventilation system must be altered.

Can any stones be used as heater stones?

Heater stones should ideally be heavy, dark-colored, and large-sized to maximize heat energy storage. Heater retailers offer stones specifically designed for heaters, sourced from reputable suppliers, which ensures their composition and appropriateness. Suitable stone materials for heaters include peridotite, olivine, and olivine diabase. However, surface rocks collected directly from nature are not appropriate for use in heaters.

Ceramic "stones" and soft soapstones are not recommended due to their insufficient heat storage capacity during heater operation. This deficiency can cause the heater to overheat and lead to the breakdown of heating elements.

The arrangement of heater stones should be according to the heater's installation and user instructions. Heater stones are generally available in two sizes.

How often should the heater stones be changed in a family sauna?

The frequency of changing heater stones largely depends on the extent of heater usage. For instance, if the heater is used on an average of twice a week, it would be advisable to replace the stones annually. Over time, the stones crumble and compact in the stone compartment, decreasing air circulation. It's therefore important to periodically rearrange the stones.

Sufficient air circulation ensures an optimal sauna experience and also prolongs the life of the heating elements.

What is the correct sauna temperature?

The temperature setting of the sauna should promote perspiration for the user seated on the bench, while also ensuring comfort. There isn't a universally correct or incorrect sauna temperature, as individual preferences vary, considering factors like age and health status.

For high sauna temperatures (80-100 °C), the air may seem dry, even when moisture is added by splashing water on the stones. The resulting steam can feel quite intense.

On the other hand, at lower sauna temperatures (50-60 °C), a larger quantity of water can be used, resulting in humid, softer air. This combination of low temperature and increased water usage works best with heaters that have a large quantity of stones.

Can an electric heater give me an electric shock?

When installed properly, electric heaters are safe to use. The heaters are wired to the power grid so that any metallic parts that may be touched are grounded. The heater's design prevents any contact with live electrical components.

Why does the steam feel hot on my skin?

Water is splashed onto the heater stones to create an enjoyable humidity level inside the sauna. However, if the sauna is extremely hot, the steam generated from the heater may feel excessively hot to the individuals in the sauna.
