quick faq's

What exactly is a steam shower?

A steam shower heats water until it vaporizes and then pumps that invigorating steam into an enclosed area for your enjoyment. It’s a simple idea—but doing it efficiently, reliably, and beautifully is an art and a science that MrSteam has spent decades mastering.

What are the the 4 main components of a steam shower?

1. Generator

The generator powers your steam system by boiling water. It’s about the size of a briefcase, though the exact size varies based on your shower’s construction. It can be installed up to 60 feet away in a closet, vanity, attic, or basement - basically any dry, heated location - with 12 inches of space around the generator for ventilation.

  • 13 features to look for when buying a steam generator

2. Control

Installed inside the shower and away from direct steam flow, the control lets you manage your steam session. You can choose to control everything from temperature and duration to music, lighting and aromatherapy.

3. Steamhead

This is where the steam is released. It’s installed on the shower wall, about 6-12 inches above the floor and opposite the seating area.

Options:

  • Aroma Glass Steamheads
  • Aroma Designer Finish Steamheads
  • Linear Steamheads

4. Plumbing & Power

Your system will run on household electric power (208v or 240v). You will need a water line to the generator, steam line from generator to shower, and a drain line.

How do I chose the right components for my steam shower?

1. Size

There are different size generators for different size showers. High ceilings or particularly large spaces will require a larger generator.

2. Materials

Most shower enclosures use one or more of these materials: tile, natural stone, acrylic, fiberglass, or composites. Each material has different heat retention properties, and this will be a factor in the generator you choose.

3. Construction

Your shower must be enclosed, insulated, and sealed. Windows, if any, should be double-paned. If you’re tiling your shower, be aware that larger tiles are friendlier to steam because they collect less condensation.

4. Ventilation

There should be no heating, venting or air-conditioning components inside the shower. All light fixtures must be vapor-sealed.

Why should I create the ultimate steam shower?

Plus, steam bathing offers dozens of benefits that range from physical to holistic wellness. Below are a few notable benefits of using a home steam shower:

1. Respiratory Health

Whether you have seasonal issues, ongoing issues or just get the occasional cold, steam may moisten nasal passages, soothe your throat and help you feel better.

2. Skincare

If you want clear, smooth skin, steam bathing may be able to help. A nice steam session can
open your pores, hydrate your skin and leave you with a healthy glow.

3. Physical Wellness

Many people relax, soothe body aches and may even get a better night’s sleep by using a steam shower daily. You can even combine steam bathing with SteamTherapy’s like AromaTherapy, ChromaTherapy and MusicTherapy to enhance your experience.

With all of these possible ways that steam could help you feel good, it only makes sense to add a home steam shower. Plus, a steam shower can be easily added to your bathroom remodel, new home construction or simple retrofitting of your existing shower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Remodeling

What are some of the points necessary to know about changing an existing shower?

You want to limit the steam room ceiling to eight (8) feet in height. While you can exceed this height, doing so will require a larger generator.

The shower, including the door frame, needs to be fully enclosed. You cannot use a standard shower door with a top or bottom opening.

In very large steam showers, you may want to slope the ceiling slightly, so that condensation drops run down the wall and don’t drip onto steam bather’s heads. If you are building a steam room that’s not part of a shower, be sure to include a floor drain.

You will need to include a vapor barrier and/or waterproof material behind any surface material.  It is critical to make sure that the walls and ceiling are properly ventilated for steam. Providing a waterproof membrane is very important.

Ventilation should not be included in the shower stall. You should also not locate any heating or air conditioning vents inside the shower.

Windows that are part of the steam room should be double-paned and constructed of tempered safety glass.

Does it matter what shower surface I use?

Steam can be used with most wall surfaces, except for wood. Walls and ceilings must be constructed of water-resistant, non-corrosive surface, such as tile, natural or man-made stone, molded acrylic, or other non-porous material.

Learn more about steam room wall preparation by visiting the Tile Council of North America, Inc., website, which provides useful guidelines for remodelers.

You can also purchase a copy of the TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass and Stone Tile Installation.

Where can I put the generator?

It is important to allow access to the generator to be able to service it and address any issues. Some places that MrSteam recommends placing a generator are under a sealed bench in the shower, in a closet or vanity, in the basement, or in a properly insulated and heated attic.

Once the generator is in place, a plumber and electrician will help you make the appropriate connections:

  • The generator can be installed up to 60 feet away from the steam shower, even on a different story of the house. This includes either an attic or basement if they are insulated. Using MrSteam’s wireless control, you can install the generator up to 90 feet away from the shower
  • The generator requires appropriate power, making certain it has its own dedicated fuse
  • The generator also needs running water, as well as a way to flush the tank after every use

Where do I put the SteamHead and the control?

The best place to position the SteamHead is on the wall with the faucets. Place the steam head away from user at a height of 6-12 inches from the floor. Optimally, the control should be placed at the other end of the shower near the seating area and installed 4-5 feet from the floor. This makes it easily accessible when people are seated.

Can I use existing electrical in the house?

You may, as long as there is a dedicated circuit available for the steam generator, with the proper amps to meet code. Steam generators are 208V or 240V in most residential installations.

Can anyone install a steam system?

Steam system installation isn’t rocket science, buts there is electrical and plumbing involved. Mr. Steam and ZiahCare recommend that homeowners use professional installers that are licensed and bonded.

Construction

What do I need to know about the making sure a steam shower can be installed in a typical shower application?

Check the suitability of any materials with your current manufacturers. Walls and ceilings must be constructed of water-resistant, non-corrosive surface, such as tile, natural or man-made stone, molded acrylic, or other non-porous material. The ceiling should be sloped to control the direction of condensation, and you need to include a floor drain.

Windows that are part of the steam room should be double paned and tempered safety glass. You want to limit the steam room ceiling to eight (8) feet in height. Exceeding this height, while it is possible, will require adding to the size of the generator selected.

How do I install the generator and therapy components?

You need to prepare a fully accessible area for the generator, along with any SteamTherapy components.  Mr. Steam recommends placing a generator in one of the following places in the home:

  • Under a vanity
  • In a closet
  • Under a bench
  • In a heated attic space

Once the generator is in place, you’ll work with your plumber and electrician to make the appropriate connections:

  • You can install the generator up to 60 feet away from the steam shower – and even locate it on another floor altogether. This can include either an attic or basement if they are insulated. And with our industry exclusive wireless control you can install the generator up to 90 feet away from the shower
  • Running appropriate power to the generator and making sure it has its own dedicated fuse
  • Running water to the generator and making sure there is a way to flush the tank after use

What do I need to know about installing the SteamHead and control unit?

Place the steam head away from user, while installing the control unit as close as possible. Mr. Steam recommends that the SteamHead height be 6-12” from the floor, while the control should be installed 5-7’ from the floor.

Plumbing

How far away can I place the generator from the shower?

Mr. Steam generators can be installed up to 60 feet from the steam room when steam lines are properly insulated. The generators come standard with a 30-foot cable, but an optional 60-foot cable is available for purchase if needed.

We do recognize that sometimes the bathroom design or other factors requires that you exceed this 60-foot line.

Why must we install the generator with a 12” clearance? Is it because of the heat?

The generator should be installed with a 12″ clearance, though the back of the steam unit can be placed against a wall. The reason for this is not because of heat. Mr. Steam generators are zero tolerance, which means they don’t become hot on the outside. The 12″ clearance is only needed for any future service and maintenance.

Can the generator be installed above the shower?

Yes, you can situate the generator above the shower. However, make sure that you do not install the generator or plumbing lines in an unheated attic or any other location where water could potentially freeze. The generator can also be located in a service room, equipment room, or boiler room in a high rise, under a vanity, in the wall, or almost anywhere else.

The one thing to be certain of is that you provide easy access as required by electrical codes for future maintenance and potential service. Under no circumstances should you install the generator outdoors or inside the steam room.

Can I lay the steam unit on its side?

The steam generator must be installed upright and level. Mr. Steam generators use electronic water probes, which allow us to accurately read the water level inside the tank. Placing the unit on its side means that we don’t have the ability to read the correct water levels.

How far should the steamhead be off the floor?

Position the SteamHead 6″ to 12″ off the floor. This ensures that the steam will be emitted at just the right level to fill the steam shower from top to bottom

Is it all right to use PEX tubing, or PEX pipe, to install the generator?

No.  PEX is plastic and is not rated for steam, which reaches temperatures of 212ºF.

Can the steam line be run down and up?

Absolutely not. The steam line should never create a “U,” as this forms a trap.  The trap, the lowest point in the system, collects condensation.  Subsequent back pressure in the system created by condensation in the trap can become hazardous. Residential steam generators are intended for atmospheric operation only, and back pressure in the steam line created by the trap will force the pressure relief valve on the steam generator to open.

Do we need to insulate the steam line and if so, what type of insulation should we use?

Steam cools as it travels through the steam line. To reduce heat loss, Mr. Steam recommends 220-degree rated fiber glass insulation.

Can we drain back into the shower?

It is not recommended. To keep the shower looking immaculate and new, it is best to flush dirt and sediment into a drain.
